Science of Anticipation & Complexity
This initiative is grounded in the recognition that complexity is a defining feature of modern society. Complex systems are characterized by feedback loops, emergence, uncertainty, and sensitivity to initial conditions. Small actions can trigger disproportionate effects, while well-intended interventions can produce unintended consequences. Anticipation therefore requires new ways of thinking that integrate systems analysis, foresight, and adaptive learning.
The project emphasizes the importance of shifting from reaction to prevention and preparedness. Anticipatory approaches seek to identify early warning signals, understand underlying drivers, and explore plausible future scenarios before crises escalate. This enables more resilient policies, flexible institutions, and informed leadership capable of navigating uncertainty.
A central focus of the initiative is integrating scientific insight with decision-making. Complexity science must be translated into practical tools for governance, economic planning, technology management, and social policy. This requires collaboration across disciplines and the development of shared frameworks that support long-term thinking rather than short-term optimization.
Ultimately, the Science of Anticipation & Complexity project aims to strengthen collective intelligence in the face of uncertainty. By enhancing the ability to foresee emerging risks and opportunities, the initiative supports more coherent, adaptive, and responsible responses鈥攈elping societies manage complexity while advancing human security, sustainability, and long-term stability.

Anticipation, Agency and Complexity
Trento, 6-8 April 2017
This session explores the vital intersection of Anticipation, Agency, and Complexity, challenging the traditional reactive models of global governance and social organization. By moving beyond linear forecasting, the dialogue examines how the human capacity for “anticipatory thinking” can be harnessed to navigate the radical uncertainties of the 21st century. The event focuses on empowering individual and collective agency to shape future outcomes rather than merely adapting to them, seeking to define a new framework for decision-making that is resilient to systemic complexity and rooted in the proactive pursuit of human security and planetary well-being. First International Conference on Anticipation
Trento, November 5-7, 2015
This landmark event marked the launch of a new transdisciplinary field, exploring Anticipation as a fundamental constituent of human and social systems. Moving beyond traditional forecasting or simple prediction, the conference examined how the “future” actively shapes the present through the perceptions, expectations, and preparations of conscious agents. By convening experts from diverse disciplines鈥攊ncluding biology, sociology, and economics鈥攖he gathering sought to create a rigorous theoretical framework for understanding how anticipatory behavior can be harnessed to navigate global complexity, improve decision-making, and enhance the collective agency required to build a resilient and sustainable future.
